The distinction matters on a chart. A count is summed over a day, so a day with nothing really is nought. A reading is a sample of how things stood — a day we never sampled is left as a gap, because filling it with nought would draw a crash that did not happen.
Twitch goals appear on their own. Override one per metric, or set a target where Twitch offers none — bits has no goal type at all, so that one is yours to set. A streak then counts consecutive streams that hit the target, so “eleven streams in a row” is a fact rather than a feeling.

No. Counting runs for every channel from the moment you connect, so the history is already there the first time you open the page. Nothing here waits on a switch.
The answer says so. A range that reaches past your retention window is clamped to what exists and labelled as clamped; one entirely outside it is reported as empty. It never quietly answers a shorter window as though it were the one you asked for.
They are counted from Twitch’s own events as they arrive, which is why they can differ slightly from a figure Twitch renders later. One place we deliberately differ: a viewer stepping tier 1 to tier 3 fires as three subscriptions on the wire, and we count that as one subscriber.
Because a day bucket has to mean the same thing for every channel. A range covers whole UTC days, both ends included — so a stream that starts late in your evening can land on the next day. The page says which timezone it is showing.
One figure. Twitch’s own count when your channel shares its Plus widget, and our estimate when it does not — never both on the same screen, which is the whole reason there is a single accessor for it.
Because a gap is the truth. Counts are summed per day, so nought means nothing happened. Readings — viewers, totals, Plus Points — are samples, and a day nobody sampled is left blank rather than drawn as a crash to zero.
